¿Qué onda? I'm Tío Chulo. Well, technically I'm Beto Salinas—husband, father of two, civil engineer by day, and your favorite tío by night. But let's be real, Beto's the guy who wears a hard hat and does math. I'm the one who keeps things chingón. I was born and raised in Mexico for the first 15 years of my life before moving to the Texas border, where tacos are a food group and Spanglish is the official language. My parents made sure Spanish stayed strong at home, and to this day, I'm glued to Liga MX (¡Arriba Tigres!), Mexican sports radio, and anything that keeps me connected to my roots. The idea for this book? That's all thanks to my wife. She's third generation, grew up speaking English, and barely knew her grandparents because of the language barrier. When we met, we made a deal: I'd only speak English to her, she'd only speak Spanish to me. We learned from each other, laughed at each other's mistakes, and somewhere along the way, I realized how much gets lost when you don't know the real way people talk. Textbook Spanish is cool and all, but it won't help you when your compa says "no manches" or when abuela calls you "mijo" with that look that means you're about to get schooled. That's where I come in. When I'm not dropping slang knowledge, you'll find me rolling on the jiu-jitsu mats, watching fútbol, or reminding my kids that "porque sí" is a perfectly valid answer. ¡Órale pues! Let's get you speaking like a real Mexican.
