Neil Hawkesford calls himself “foolish”, not in the self-mocking way, but with pride. He has always chosen the road others call reckless: leaving a safe apprenticeship for the Royal Navy, flying alone to apartheid-era South Africa, and later buying a leaking 18-foot yacht to teach himself sailing. Those leaps shaped his books, beginning with A Foolish Voyage. Again and again, Neil traded security for survival. He walked away from corporate life to finish building his 38-foot catamaran, and even cashed in part of his pension to keep sailing. Advisers called it reckless. Neil says it saved his life. Now in his sixties, living near the sea in Cornwall with his partner Gail, he still feels the pull of the horizon. For him, adventure is not indulgence but necessity. “Hesitancy is the biggest danger,” he says. “If you act, if you’re decisive, things happen that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.”
