Dr. Graves holds a Ph.D. in Environmental, Evolutionary and Systematic Biology from Wayne State University (1988). Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS.) “Sensational Sixty” commemorating 60 years of the NSF GRFP. “Outstanding Graduates” in Biology at Oberlin College; “Innovator of the Year” in US Black Engineer Magazine. In 2024, “Genius Award” from the Liberty Science Center; Outstanding Alumni Service Award from Oberlin College; Patrusky Lecture organized by Council of American Science Writers. Co-PI for the NSF funded Precision Microbiome Engineering (PreMiEr) Gen-4 ERC; Director/PI for the Amgen Biotech Experience NC; and Director/co-PI for the NIH funded Genomic Research and Cloud Computing (GRADS-4C). He has published eight books: The Emperor's New Clothes, RUP, 2005; The Race Myth, Dutton Press, 2005; Principles and Applications of Antimicrobial Nanomaterials, (Elsevier), 2021; Racism, Not Race, (with Alan Goodman, Columbia University Press, 2022; winner of W.W.
