Joe Luc Barnes is a journalist and author whose work has appeared in the Financial Times, Nikkei Asia, The Diplomat, and The Times of Central Asia, with video reporting featured on TRT World. He’s spent a decade living and working across the former Soviet Union and China. His fascination with the region began with Russian literature. Before long, he was living it, working as a governor in a dacha outside Moscow. He later studied a master’s in Russian and East European Politics at Oxford, though this only confirmed his belief that you’ll find more wisdom in a village pub than in the cloisters of any university. In an age of work-from-home punditry, he prefers the messiness of the road: the haze of smoky bars, chance encounters in a railway dining car. He counts Tim Butcher’s Blood River, Che Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries, and Fitzroy Maclean’s Eastern Approaches among his greatest inspirations. Joe has lived in Argentina, Russia, China, and Kazakhstan, and is currently based between London and Central Asia. When away from England, the things he misses most are carols, Yorkie bars, and Newcastle United home games.
