My first novel, Paul Larsh: An Original Frontiersman, was a number one bestseller in the Historical French Fiction and War & Military Action Fiction categories. I recently published a sequel, Frontier Warriors, which catches up with the original cast of characters (with the addition of some new people) a decade later during the American Revolution. My third novel, “1787: An American Frontier Tale,” was published on April 23, 2025. The theme focuses on the westward expansion beyond the Appalachian Mountains, as experienced by the people of the time. As in my first two novels, I maintained the authenticity of the period, using close-to-the-source material whenever possible. I walked the locations of long-gone settlements, fortifications, fading pioneer cemeteries, and a portion of a remaining buffalo trace. I visited genealogy rooms and the Kentucky Gateway Museum, where I pored over original period documents. I also accessed material from the National Archives, the National Constitution Center, and JSTOR (a digital library). One example I found at JSTOR is a gem titled Mrs. Mary Dewees’s Journal from Philadelphia to Kentucky, 1787-1788, in which the writer did a fantastic job vividly detailing her weeks-long journey. Books such as “Collins Historical Sketches of Kentucky,” Lewis Collins and Richard H. Collins, 1874; “Indian Thoroughfares,” Archer Butler Hulbert, 1902; “History of Lewis County, Kentucky,” O.G. Ragan, 1912;  and “Indian Paths of Pennsylvania,” Paul A. Wallace, 1965, further allowed me to get a real sense of the countryside and paths as they were in the late 18th century. However, I am a novelist, and mine are not history books; they are about the people of the frontier — their trials, strength, and resilience. It is a tale of how they lived, loved, fought, struggled, and endured. I strove to tell their incredible story with dignity and realism, bringing them to life on the pages. Readers will ultimately decide whether I have accomplished my mission.
