Dr Danny Penman is a meditation teacher and author. He is co-author of the two million selling 'Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World' which has so far been translated into more than 35 languages. He is also the winner of the British Medical Association’s Best Book Award for 'Mindfulness for Health: A Practical Guide to Relieving Pain, Reducing Stress and Restoring Wellbeing' (published in the US as 'You Are Not Your Pain'). His work has appeared in the Guardian, the Independent, and the Daily Mail while his investigative journalism has been broadcast by the BBC and Channel 4 News. He has received journalism awards from the RSPCA and the Humane Society of the United States. Dr Penman has been a keen meditator since his teenage years. He discovered mindfulness meditation following a serious paragliding accident that left him temporarily disabled and with chronic pain. He was so surprised by how effective a painkiller (and stress-reliever) the meditations proved to be, that he sought out Professor Mark Williams of Oxford University, co-developer of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. The pair then wrote the international bestseller 'Mindfulness', which is credited with bringing meditation into the medical (and popular) mainstream. His books are now used across the UK's NHS and other health-care systems around the world to treat anxiety, stress, depression and chronic pain. Dr Penman recovered from his paragliding injuries in record time and is now a keen runner, cyclist, and long-distance hiker. He credits his recovery, in large part, to the meditations he has practiced since his accident. He now lives in Bristol, UK, with his wife and two children.
