Des is a trauma survivor, not a therapist. His books, however, have been enthusiastically adopted by a wide variety of professionals in mental health, psychotherapy, and physical training who use them in their practices. Des's books were inspired by his personal experiences years ago and in recent years while taking care of his late wife during her 10-year battle with dementia. But to be strong for her, he had to deal with his trauma. In the Cold War “Vietnam era,” when Des served with US Allied anti-communist forces in Africa with an Airborne unit, no one had ever heard of PTSD. But we can be pretty sure that serving initially for two years as a teenager, then on active reserve (another 8 years), while juggling married life, raising a family, a full-time job in Advertising, night and weekend university (4 years), probably did create some form of trauma. While subconsciously, Des did many things now regarded as therapies over many years; it was only the need to be strong as a sole caregiver for his late wife of 59 years, in her last four years, that Des began formal conscious therapy implementation from a specific genre: Somatic Therapy, the title of his first book. This study then led him to try to grapple with Attachment issues, which he addressed in his second book, 'Attachment Theory Explained'. The third book is a "two-in-one" publication, comprising both complete books for a small premium over buying them separately. His fourth book is "Aging Parents: The Caregiving Tipping Point". This book was inspired by Emma Heming Willis, the wife of Bruce Willis, who was diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia, the same as his wife's diagnosis, brought on by a stroke. In a press interview, Emma stated that after the doctor gave her the diagnosis, he provided a "pamphlet" and wished her "good luck. She wrote a bestselling book, "The Unexpected Journey," which is about how she learned to cope with her caregiving role. It is an excellent inspirational read. Des didn't want anyone with a similar diagnosis to tackle the worst of all diseases without more comprehensive guidance than Emma's pamphlet. So his book, based on personal experience, is a purely practical book about the unvarnished, unfortunate reality of what a dementia diagnosis can do to completely upend every aspect of life for family and friends that nobody really wants to talk about. In a 2025 New Year's Instagram DM to Des, Emma said: "I'm so proud of you for using your voice to help others because it will. I'm so sorry to hear about your wife and that you know this journey at all. I hope you found some healing in writing your manuscript because I know I did". And Emma was right. It was cathartic for Des. Des is a "patient" practitioner of Somatic Therapy who studied CBT Therapy under Professor Luana Marques, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
