Born and bread in South Wales UK. Derry is the youngest son of four boys who was raised by their father after their mother died when Derry was just four years of age. Following in his father’s footsteps, Derry fell in love with the fantasy genre, reading such classics as The Magician by Raymond E Feist and anything by David Gemmel. But there was another genre which filtered through over the years, a darker element called horror, specifically, supernatural horror. Introduced to the master’s works himself, Derry read Stephen King’s - The Shining and then the sequel - Doctor Sleep, which he regards as the best book he has ever read. Following the breakup of a marriage, Derry was left mourning the constant contact with his two young children but found solace in writing a fictional story that involved them when he was parted from them. And so, The Books of Magick were born. After seeking permission off their mother, who Derry remains good friends with to this day, he began writing a parallel universe where magic exists which was centred around his children and their mother. Never meant to be a published work, it was only when prodded by a few friends that the books became a reality on Amazon. Using the names of many friends and that of loved ones at the time that each book was written, Derry built his world, but the characters themselves were created from deep within his subconscious, and are all different aspects of himself, even those of his children, for the real Francesca and Lucian are far more well behaved than the little tyrants in the books, as is their mother far less annoying. (Bless her cotton socks!) Drawing from his many experiences from working Niteclub doors to having a keen interest in the forbidden arts, Derry built a different world that he believes brings a little wonder and excitement into the mundane trials set before us today. One thing is for sure, which is that there are no good people or bad, sometimes it’s just a matter of opinion and the situations thrust upon us. To this end, Derry has striven to show the good and bad in all characters. Some forgivable, some, not so much. Once asked if the methods and belief systems used in the books were from a real religion or belief system, Derry simply answered that if magick exists, what he has written is how it is done.
