I was told about this book about Thailand, nine months and five visits afer to Thailand and more importantly - thousands of dollars spent on bar girls - and one in particular who broke my heart and my wallet.
This book is a "warning call" to all farangs (foreigners to Thailand) - while clearly a fictional tale of Pete (a journalist who should have known better and should have been much smarter and not fallen for a bar girl in Bangkok).
Many of the story lines rang true for myself and my encounters with one particular bar girl in Pattaya - a haven and hotbed of bar girls, gogo bars and a hedonistic lifestyle that has lured countless number of western men to its environs.
I indeed which I would have known about this book before I travelled to Thailand the first time - my first night in Bangkok cost me thousands of Thai baht after a very short trip to a gogo bar in Soi cowboy - a notorious part of Bangkok's seedy night life and an encounter with a (clearly) clever bar girl who picked me for a first-timer in Thailand - was it that obvious ?
The author (Stephen Leather) cleverly gives voice to a number of characters and different perspectives and also that of the possible mindset of bar girls and their view of foreigners coming to Thailand for one thing - cheap sex and little else.
This should be essential reading by any first timers to Thailand thinking they may find love with a Thai girl - it may indeed happen for some (but very few) and is essential reading and guide book to the pitfalls and dangers of bar life in Thailand.

Im not sure if Joy sounds Jamaican, African , Asian or European or maybe its a mix of all. The lady who reads Joys part is obviously english with no idea of how a Thai lady sounds! Her Thai accent it terrible!!! I had to stop listening.

the female voice of joy is rediculous.

serves as a terrific education on the thai sex industry and culture in general. should be standard issue for anyone in a cross cultural relationship with a Thai. the insights were great, but the story is very repetitive. I would have much preferred to hear more about the minor characters than endless lamenting from Pete about not being able to trust his sex worker lover.
