It is not an easy job to draw the border between the history of Italy and the history of Rome. In so many places, the two political and geographical entities collide. They wouldn’t be possible without each other, but they each have their own story. Rome’s history is only a small fragment of Italy’s history. Although it is just a city, Rome was the birthplace of the republic, a great empire, and notable philosophers, poets, and artists.

26 maggio 1805: dopo l'incoronazione a imperatore dei francesi, avvenuta nella cattedrale di Nôtre Dame a Parigi il 2 dicembre dell'anno precedente, Napoleone celebra il suo insediamento sul trono del Regno d'Italia.

15 settembre 1864: a tre anni dall'unificazione, la capitale del nuovo Stato fu trasferita da Torino a Firenze. Città provinciale e cosmopolita, Firenze fu vista come una buona mediazione tra le rigidità piemontesi e la sfida che si voleva portare a Roma, ancora saldamente nelle mani del papa. L'evento ebbe un forte peso istituzionale e un significativo impatto simbolico.
