東京落語では、「錦の袈裟」という演題で、寄席や落語会で頻繁に上演されますが、上方落語では、珍品の一つに数えられています。

昔は上演されていた落語が今では演じる者が無くなり、滅んだと言われるネタも数多くあります。「そば茶屋」も、その一つ。三代目桂米朝が粗筋を覚えていたのを桂文我が再構成し、上演するようになりました。

最近は少なくなりましたが、以前は正月・祭・祝い事で芝居をすることが、頻繁にありました。
