Frontline

Frontline is the story of an aristocrat's daughter who joins the war effort as a nurse. In a field hospital in rural France, she meets Will, a dockworker's son serving as a stretcher-bearer. As rumours of an armistice begin to circulate, so, too, does a mysterious respiratory illness that soldiers are referring to as the 'Spanish flu'.

Having shown courage and strength on the battlefield, Will and Grace are back in the UK and working at the cutting edge of modern medicine. At every turn, they see a country in flux. The postwar years are heady and unpredictable. Many of their contemporaries are following serious paths, committing to causes of the day—workers' rights, votes for women, an independent Ireland. Others seek refuge in more earthly and bohemian pleasures. But as young parents and practising medics, they have—more than anything—duties of care and compassion that cannot be ignored.

Kitty has escaped her family home in England to join an international brigade of fighters high up on the snow-covered Spanish borders, determined to lead an effective fight against the growing Fascist forces sweeping across Spain. In Oxford, Grace has embarked on a new posting, working with two medical scientists—one Australian, one a German refugee—on the brink of a great discovery that will impact a life-changing treatment for infection. But for now, they need to keep their findings away from the envious eyes of Nazi extremists.
