Bales is a forensic accountant who lives in a smart apartment overlooking the River Cam and Midsummer Common in Cambridge. He’s got a great job and money in the bank, and he drives a Jag. Everything is perfect; then one day he meets Katie, a kickboxing personal trainer. Katie is in trouble with HMRC, and asks for his help. Bales never could resist a damsel in distress, especially one who is so feisty. So he agrees to help her.

Bales’s forensic accountancy firm is up and running and exceeding expectations. Life is good; the only problem left is dealing with Katie’s outstanding tax bill. That is until Bales meets Hannah Morley at the HMRC offices in Cambridge. She needs his help at The Morley Pub Group... Against his better judgement, Bales also squeezes in another job. A missing person with Cambridgeshire connections; the only clues are contained in a series of puzzling box files.

Bales & Katie are back - America should have probably locked the doors. Susan wants a divorce. More specifically, she wants the money her husband has quietly made disappear — and she's hiring forensic accountant Peter 'Bales' Bailey to find it. The job takes him and Katie across the Atlantic to Boston, Massachusetts.
