So far, while working at a ghost matchmaking agency, the past week has gone thusly: 1) a murdered ghost bride who is very, very pissed off (don’t blame her, I’d be pissed off too) 2) adopted by Chinese hellhounds (I THOUGHT THEY WERE DOGS, OKAY) 3) wake up magically soul-bonded to the sexy demon slayer Zhen (While I agree he’s—expansive hand waving—HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!) I do not need a fourth incident to make my life more interesting, please and thank you. Spoiler alert: I get one anyway.

Mei Li and her team of experts have no time to catch their breath before the next wave of magical problems hit them. Saving the world will take stamina, patience, magic, and time. And a little help from dragons. And by a little, she means a lot. Mei Li is ready for the world-ending disasters to be over, please and thank you.

Apparently, time-travel spells have a sense of humor and don’t take direction well. Mei Li could’ve done with knowing that beforehand and fully blames Shunlei for not forewarning her. Instead of going back a few years to rescue the missing tomes, Mei Li finds herself thousands of years in the past, with the original events she needs to learn about still 10 years into the future. She is stuck in a hurry-up-and-wait pattern she doesn’t appreciate.

World War III left the world in ruins, but now a new society has sprung up from the ashes, ruled by an unseen dictator who believes a system of strict equality is the best way to prevent future strife. Too much beauty, intelligence, or personality is severely frowned upon. Those who run afoul of the Dictator are punished, sometimes with death and sometimes with a more mysterious and terrible fate, being "emptied".
