Roma, 8 giugno 1944. Vera Simoni, figlia del generale Simone Simoni, massacrato nell'eccidio delle Fosse Ardeatine, guida un corteo di donne decise a incontrare il tenente colonnello John Pollock, comandante per la pubblica sicurezza a Roma. Sono vedove, madri, sorelle, figlie delle vittime e chiedono che ai 335 ostaggi massacrati il 24 marzo 1944 sia data degna sepoltura. Non hanno tempo per piangere e vogliono che quel luogo di morte diventi un simbolo: un'area sacra di lutto per ricordare i ribelli chiamati a combattere per la libertà.
