સામાન્ય રીતે વાલ્મીકિ રામાયણને રામકથાનો મૂળ ગ્રંથ માનવામાં આવે છે. આમ છતાં તુલસી રામાયણ, કંબન રામાયણ, કૃત્તિવાસ રામાયણ, ગિરિધર રામાયણ, અધ્યાત્મ રામાયણ, જૈન રામાયણ, બૌધ્ધ રામાયણ અને મુસ્લિમ રામાયણ સુદ્ધાં, અન્ય અનેક રામકથાઓ ઉપલબ્ધ છે. રામકથાઓની કુલ સંખ્યા લગભગ ત્રણસો જેટલી હોવાનું કહેવાય છે. આ બધી કથાઓમાં પરસ્પરનો છેદ ઉડાડી દે એવા વિસંવાદી કથાનકો છે. આ નવલકથામાં આ બધા વિસંવાદી કથાનકોને એવી રસપ્રદ રીતે ગૂંથીને સમગ્ર નવલકથાનો ઘટાટોપ રચવામાં આવ્યો છે કે પાયાના માનવીય મૂલ્યોનો જ પ્રતિઘોષ કરે છે. માણસમાં રહેલું અસ્તિવાચક તત્વ રામ છે અને એ જ માણસમાં રહેલું નાસ્તિવાચક તત્વ રાવણ છે.
