Der Vagabund Sjemka schlägt sich mit Gelegenheitsarbeiten und Diebereien durch. Er träumt vom großen Geld und will zugleich Rache nehmen, indem er gerade den Mann ausraubt und totschlägt, wegen dessen Anzeige er in jungen Jahren ins Gefängnis gekommen war. Am geplanten Tatort, einer Brücke, trifft er auf ein Mädchen, das sich aus Liebeskummer ins Wasser stürzen will. Sjemka hält sie ab und macht ihr neuen Mut. Im Gespräch mit dem Mädchen, dessen Wesensart Sjemka entzückt, wird ihm klar, vor welcher Tat er stand. Am nächsten Morgen beginnt er ein neues Leben.
