On any given day, men and women around the world are practicing ancient faiths. They do so to embrace a freedom many have felt has been denied them. It has become a fountain of inspiration for the world. The effects of the new thought processes are changing the very face of society. It is doing so in ways with which we are just now coming to grips.

Not so long ago I was enjoying a profound discussion with a good friend of mine. His analogy of all roads lead to Rome really meaning that all roads lead to the door of death has stuck with me. Largely because it means we are going to need to discuss an ancient Goddess. Hel. Who, as she is described in the lore is most difficult to understand. But it is entirely in line with what a Christian would need people to think. For it was the promise of Jesus that there would be life everlasting. The first thing you need to do is to vilify death and make it a scary place.

Every man and woman will encounter numerous situations in life where they feel that they are seemingly helpless. We find ourselves unable to help someone we believe we love over some seemingly insurmountable hump in their life. We might begin to doubt our value to them. We might lose our perspective on things and begin to believe that we are “unhappy” because of who we are with.

This wonderfully romantic tale is only found in the paper copies of The Eddas, an unnamed collection of Norse works. Snorri, an Icelandic historian and poet, doesn’t mention it elsewhere in his works. It is probably not much older than the 17th century. Being that we cannot trace its origin much further back than that, it is largely ignored. But I believe we do so at the risk of missing how these grand tales became what they are today.

Just exactly how should a man be expected to act? What kind of outcome will there be for a man who adopts this way of life we call Asatru? Stanza 142 tells me all I really need to know. Once I kill the ego or that bloated perception of self, new things will begin to appear in our lives. Positive things that had previously been out of reach. Starting at a place which brought us to a point where the very concept of our survival hinged upon the imperative of change, we have rediscovered an ancient path.
