The book details the sexual awakening and erotic adventures of “Charlie", a young man born into upperclass British society. The original edition was published in four volumes. The first two (this book) detailing Charlie's introduction to sex and his exploits up to his teenage years. Volumes three and four were about his more mature years. Today, it is often published as two seperate books.

My Grandmother's Tale first appeared as a serialized novelette in several issues of The Pearl, an underground magazine of erotica that appeared during the Victorian age. In this story, a grandmother, May, reflects on her sexual awaking at a young age, and details her many sexual trysts over the years, in explicit and often humorous descriptions. She then has some of her friends relate their experiences.

Captain Charles Devereaux, who is very happy in his post in Britain, where he can be with his loving and very amorous wife, is sent to the North West Frontier of India for a prolonged posting. Although it was his intention to remain faithful to his wife, he soon finds temptation is too much for him. For the first half of the book, he describes his erotic adventures with Lizzie Wilson, his "Venus". Then he is transferred to a more remote outpost and meets the three lovely daughters of a colonel.

In this book, written entirely in letters, we meet a young Victorian couple who are, at least in the beginning, profoundly ignorant of anything to do with sex. Then they meet a “woman with experience”, and their sexual education begins. They are soon awakened to their amorous longings and describe exactly how that happens in a series of letters. This book is for adults only, since the descriptions describe a wide variety of sexual activities very explicitly. Like many books of Victorian erotica, this book is a fascinating look at the “other side” of the Victorian era.
