This short volume has turned out to be merely a handful of recollections of well-remembered times and stories - some probably misremembered, too - and a few people who have played a crucial part in my life. And some confessions: I have never before tried to write about my doll phobia, for instance, or about the effect synaesthesia has had over the years. I can only hope that this collection of stories from times past might give some idea of a mostly happy life that has gone, and is going, much too fast.

In middle age, she was closely connected with William Wilberforce and his fellow abolitionists. She was also a friend of the evangelical hymn-writer John Newton. She wrote moral stories and ballads on many topics and was one of the most successful writers, and perhaps the most influential Christian woman, of her day.

Kept for the Master's Use is based on Frances Ridley Havergal's famous hymn "Take My Life and Let It Be, Consecrated, Lord to Thee". It consists of separate chapters on each couplet of that well-known hymn. Frances Ridley Havergal encourages us to take every single aspect of our life and consecrate it for the Lord's use, and we are shown very clearly that "he who is able and willing to take unto Himself is no less able and willing to keep for Himself".
