Tom really wants to be an explorer. His favourite book is an atlas, and he follows adventurers not footballers. His schooldays are spent daydreaming about travelling from Tibet to Timbuktu. A private wish blurted out loud started his freewheeling adventure: I'm going to cycle round the world. His classmates laughed. No one believed him, least of all his teacher.

In this interview we spoke to Alastair about all three of his audiobooks and how things have changed for him over the years. Along the way we covered would he rather be too hot or too cold, adventure with a friend or alone, and even if it works to be married to someone with a different perspective on his travels.

In Riding the Americas, Tom dreamed of being an adventurer. But everyone told him he was crazy, so he decided to prove them wrong by cycling round the world! The first book of Tom's adventures followed him across Europe and through the mysterious landscapes of Africa. In book two, Tom pedals north from the tip of South America up through the Americas towards Alaska. He must contend with deserts, jungles and the massive mountains of the Andes. He meets grizzly bears, fascinating locals, and even a memorable guinea pig.

Alastair Humphreys walked across India, from the Coromandel Coast to the Malabar Coast, following the course of a holy river.
