Das 1896 entstandene Stück greift auf einen zwar zeitbeschränkten Stoff zurück, der aber gerade in den wunderbar zarten Liebesszenen ins zeitlos Dichterische erhoben ist. Das Drama spielt im 16. Jahrhundert während der französischen Glaubenskriege; die Handlung beruht auf historischen Tatsachen, wobei sich Romain Rolland bisweilen sogar darauf beschränkt, geschichtlich überlieferte Texte wörtlich wiederzugeben. In dem historischen Rahmen spielt sich die erschütternde Liebestragödie eines neunzehnjährigen Mädchens, Johanna von Piennes, ab.

Clérambault führt als eher durchschnittlicher Künstler ein bürgerliches Leben bis er von der patriotischen Propaganda vergiftet wird, die der französische Staat während der Mobilmachung zum ersten Weltkrieg unter seiner Bevölkerung entfacht. Durch den Tod seines Sohnes zur Besinnung gekommen verschreibt Clérambault sein Leben dem humanistischen Ideal, welches jenseits von Nationalität, Religion und Politik ethische und moralische Werte verkörpert - nur scheint dafür unter den menschlichen Herdentieren kein rechter Bedarf zu herrschen.
