Rilke verfasste die meisten der "Engellieder" im Zeitraum ab November 1897 bis Mai 1898. Zuvor war er im März bis April 1897 nach Arco in Südtirol, Venedig und Meran gereist. Nach seiner Rückkehr traf er am 12. Mai 1897 in München die 15 Jahre ältere und verheiratete Literatin Lou Andreas-Salomé und verliebte sich in sie. Was Lou zu jenem Zeitpunkt nicht wusste: Schon vorher hatte er ihr eine Reihe von anonymen Briefen mit beigefügten Gedichten zukommen lassen.
