La Protettrice è morta. Per cinquant'anni ha governato il Tensorato conformandolo a propria immagine, relegando i nemici negli angoli più remoti. Per mezzo secolo il mondo è ruotato attorno a lei, occupata a costruire le sue armate, addestrare i Tensori, afferrare le redini del destino. Un tempo le sue visioni davano forma alle vite dei suoi concittadini in tutto il paese, ma, anche se prevedeva immani tragedie, Mokoya non aveva modo di ridisegnare il futuro. Devastata dalla perdita della figlia, inizia una caccia contro i letali naga, capaci di oscurare il cielo, nelle lande più remote del regno, lontana da tutto ciò che amava, accompagnata da un branco di raptor.

Mokoya e Akeha, le gemelle figlie della Protettrice Sanao, sono state affidate al Grande Monastero da bambine per adempiere a una promessa. Mokoya ha sviluppato un talento profetico, Akeha ha sempre avuto il dono di comprendere quali motivazioni si celano dietro le azioni degli adulti.
