Life as a peasant farmer was boring, to say the least. Was I really wrong to distract myself with the mayor’s daughter? She certainly didn’t mind. Of course, the mayor did, and now I’ve been exiled to some dark, distant forest on the other side of the continent. What do you do when your entire village betrays you? When a domineering Noble Ranger shows up to grade the Gloomy Forest’s dungeon, Wyle immediately starts searching for ways to keep her around. Not all is well, however. An attack on one of his wives sends Wyle into full alert. He finds himself untrusting of the new arrivals that might help Emerald Valley become a true castle town.

He’s sent one of his own Appointed to Sparkling Bay to cut Wyle off from his most valuable trading partner, and force Emerald Valley to starve through winter. Meanwhile, the town is in full preparation mode. They stockpile food, craft warmer clothing, and there are even a few budding romances! Wyle will need to juggle his town’s needs, with his own and his wives’, while fending off new threats from a King’s Hand, and the families of a fallen dungeon party.

While dealing with the repair and rejuvenation of his newest vassal, Sparkling Bay, Wyle learns that two of his Appointed have been taken prisoner during what was supposed to be a simple trading route. The Diplomat sent by King Griffin is more monster than man. He serves as an intermediary between the King and his inhuman allies. After taking up residence to the west of Emerald Valley and holding Yan and Shareese hostage, the man sends Wyle his demands.

Despite being instrumental to the defense of Aether Academy, Jacob Pratts identity as a Shadow and a fraud lands him in prison. Jake will stand trial under Theid's replacement, Headmaster Doriah. She's ready to make a name for herself as the school begins to rebuild, and that means making an example of the Shadows and Knights who were captured during Aether Academy's assault. There are two options: exorcism and execution. Will cutting him off from the dark god Vethris be enough, or will the school decide to put Jake down for good?
