On the Day of the Dead, in 1938, Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic and ruined man, is fatefully living out his last day, drowning himself in mescal while his former wife and half-brother look on, powerless to help him. The events of this one day unfold against a backdrop unforgettable for its evocation of a Mexico at once magical and diabolical.

Beneath the twin shadows of Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl in Mexico, the Consul is drunk. He staggers from bar to bar hoping to find salvation staining the bottom of the next glass. His lonely existence is disrupted when his former wife, Yvonne, returns with, Hugh, the Consul's half-brother. But the reunion turns sour when a local peasant turns up dead, beginning a series of events that will decide the Consul's fate. In the course of one day an entire life is chronicled, set against the backdrop of Europe during the Spanish Civil War.

Es Día de Muertos y Geoffrey Firmin pasea por las cantinas de Quauhnáhuac mientras dos volcanes, el Popocatépetl y el Iztaccíhuatl, se asoman como trágico recordatorio de la crisis que tiene con Yvonne, quien acaba de regresar a México como último recurso para evitar la caída de su matrimonio y de Firmin, su esposo.

El antiguo himno de los pescadores de la isla de Man da título a esta colección de relatos publicados de manera póstuma en 1961. Al compás de las olas del mar, Lowry nos embarca en un viaje por distintos destinos y escenarios, pero también por las profundidades dela existencia humana encarnada por sus clásicos personajes como el atormentado escritor Martin Trumbaugh, o bien, el matrimonio conformado por Primrose y Sigbjørn Wilderness, uno de los altergo ficcionales del autor.

Sigbjørn Wilderness, famoso alter ego de MalcolmLowry, emprende un viaje a México junto con su esposa, Primrose, en busca de su amigo Fernando Martínez. Su visita a Oaxaca y Cuernavaca es también un viaje iniciático entre cantina y cantina, donde la desolación y la muerte acechan al protagonista hasta llegar a un final inesperado.
