Wilbrook in Western Australia is a sleepy, remote town that sits on the edge of miles and miles of unexplored wilderness. It is home to Police Sergeant Chandler Jenkins, who is proud to run the town’s small police station, a place used to dealing with domestic disputes and noise complaints. All that changes on a scorching day when an injured man stumbles into Chandler’s station. He’s covered in dried blood. His name is Gabriel. He tells Chandler what he remembers. 

A Wilbrook non c'è quasi nulla. Pochi abitanti, qualche casa, una chiesa. Strade polverose bruciate dal sole, come in un vecchio film western. E lì dietro, sull'altopiano di Gardner's Hill, caleidoscopiche sequenze di alberi e rocce affilate come lame disorientano chi passa; un esperimento di Dio, per mettere alla prova la capacità di adattamento dell'uomo alla natura. Ancora non ci crede, Gabriel, di essere riuscito a scappare.

The Kane family, Lorcan, Naiyana and their young son, relocate from Perth to Kallayee, an abandoned mining town in the Great Victoria Desert to start over again, free from their chequered past. The town seems like the perfect getaway: peaceful, quiet, remote. Somewhere they won’t be found. But life in Kallayee isn’t quite as straightforward as they hope. There are noises in the earth, mysterious shadows and tracks in the dust, as if the town is coming back to life. But the family can’t leave. No one can talk sense into them. And now, no one can talk to them at all.
