Lily Moonbeam’s kitchen had three modes: simmer, sputter, and smoke. She preferred the first, but the cottage stove had opinions of its own. This morning it gurgled a warning as she whisked dried foxglove into a viscous red broth, the spoon already sticky with what she hoped would be the final step in curing Midnight chronic hairball problem. She leaned over the pot, breath held, as the mixture shifted from angry burgundy to a soothing, peony pink.
