Absaroka, dans le Wyoming, est le comté le moins peuplé de l'État le moins peuplé d'Amérique. Y découvrir le corps d'une jeune Asiatique étranglée est plus que déconcertant. Le coupable paraît tout désigné quand on trouve, à proximité, un colosse indien frappé de mutisme en possession du sac à main de la jeune femme. Mais le shérif Walt Longmire n'est pas du genre à boucler son enquête à la va-vite. D'autant que le sac de la victime contient une vieille photo de Walt prise quarante ans plus tôt, et qui le renvoie à ses souvenirs de la guerre du Vietnam.
