Since it was first published, Eros the Bittersweet, Anne Carson's lyrical meditation on love in ancient Greek literature and philosophy, has established itself as a favorite among an unusually broad audience, including classicists, essayists, poets, and general listeners.

Anne Carson is "the most exciting poet writing in English today", said Michael Ondaatje. Carson, an essayist and classicist, is the author of many collections and translations, including Decreation, The Beauty of the Husband, Eros the Bittersweet, and Autobiography of Red. Her translations of four plays by Euripides are collected in Grief Lessons. Carson returns to the Poetry Center to perform her pieces "Cassandra Float Can" and "Lecture on Pronouns".

On May 2, 1963, Robert Killins, a former United Church minister, slaughtered every woman in his family but one. Through extensive oral histories, Cook and Carson painstakingly trace the causes of a femicide in which four women and two unborn babies were murdered over the course of one bloody evening.
