Ohne die implantierten außerirdischen Artefakte kann Zander im tödlichen Cyberspace des Phantom-Servers nicht überleben. Immer wieder führt ihn seine Quest an den Rand des Abgrunds.

Alex und Enea sind zurück in der Kristallsphäre und müssen feststellen, dass es dort zu einer Katastrophe gekommen ist. Die Reaper haben die Kontrolle über die virtuelle Realität übernommen. Diese hybriden Identitäten, die sich aus hochleveligen NPCs entwickelt haben, töten menschliche Spieler und verschlingen deren Neurogramme. Ihre Gier nach Neurogrammen ist unersättlich. Niemand ist vor den Reapern sicher, alle kämpfen ums Überleben.
