Khalil Gibran, nació en Bisharri, Líbano, el 6 de enero de 1883. A los 11 años, emigró con su familia a los Estados Unidos. Aprendió y cultivó con devoción el inglés, lengua que haría famosas sus novelas, aunque no olvidó el árabe. En 1902 inicia su vocación por la pintura, que le llevaría a ser famoso por doquier; y es en París donde expone sus obras y gana el elogio de la crítica.

Si tratta di una raccolta di poesie in prosa legate da un filo comune narrativo, nel quale si inseriscono tematiche differenti. È strutturata a domande e risposte: per ogni argomento, un personaggio fa una domanda al Profeta, il quale risponde per metafore e analogie con un testo di tipo poetico. È un testo che ha molto di religioso, pur non inserendosi esattamente in nessuna religione, dato che parla di temi quali lo spirito, la mente, la natura.

Khalil Gibran est un poète et artiste peintre libanais, Il a séjourné en Europe et passé la majeure partie de sa vie aux États-Unis. Publié en 1923 et composé de vingt-six textes poétiques, son recueil "Le Prophète" est devenu particulièrement populaire pendant les années 1960 dans le courant de la contre-culture et les mouvements New Age.
