Neville St. Clair, a respectable businessman, has disappeared and his wife claims she saw him at the upper window of an opium den. Der Außenminister ist verzweifelt: Wenn das Geheimdokument in die falschen Hände gerät, wird man England den Krieg erklären. Inspektor Lestade von Scotland Yard sucht vergeblich nach einem Hinweis auf den Dieb. In so einer Situation kann nur noch der Scharfsinn von Sherlock Holmes eine Katastrophe verhindern.

Der österreichische Adlige Baron Gruner wird verdächtigt, aus Geldgier seine Frau getötet zu haben. Kurz nach ihrem Tod verlobt er sich in England mit der jungen, ebenfalls sehr reichen Lady Violet de Merville. Ein Klient, der unter allen Umständen geheim bleiben möchte, beauftragt Sherlock Holmes durch einen Mittelsmann, diese Hochzeit zu verhindern. Holmes übernimmt den Fall und bezahlt diese Entscheidung fast mit seinem Leben.

Holmes scheint zunächst ein ruhiger Hausgenosse zu sein, aber als Scotland Yard ihn in einem äußerst rätselhaften Mordfall um Hilfe bittet, entdeckt Watson, dass sein neuer Freund einige ungewöhnliche Fähigkeiten besitzt. Und schon befindet er sich mitten im ersten der vielen Abenteuer, die er gemeinsam mit Sherlock Holmes noch erleben wird.
