Afanasij Iwanowitsch Towstogub und Pulcherija Iwanowna sind ein altes Gutsbesitzerehepaar, das sich sehr liebt und sich rührend um sich und seine Dienstboten kümmert. Doch ohne ihre Liebe und Fürsorge hat Afanasi keine Freude mehr am Leben und verwahrlost zusehends, bis er schließlich fünf Jahre nach ihr stirbt.

Akakij, ein kleiner Beamter, will seinen Mantel flicken lassen - doch überredet ihn der Schneider zu einem neuen. Als er diesen Mantel in Händen hält, ändert sich sein ganzes Leben: Er wird plötzlich wahrgenommen! Doch sein Glück ist nur kurz: Der Mantel wird gestohlen. Akakij ist verzweifelt - und sein Niedergang scheint unaufhaltsam.

Surrealismus par excellence: Als ein Barbier beim Frühstück eine Nase findet, ist er mehr als verdutzt. Sie gehört seinem Kunden Kowaljow, den er regelmäßig rasiert. Doch alle Versuche, die Nase wieder an ihren Besitzer zurückzugeben, scheitern, denn diese entwickelt ein Eigenleben.

Eine Reihe seltsamer Begebenheiten ereignen sich in der kleinen Ortschaft Dikanka in der Nacht vor Weihnachten. Während sich die Älteren für einen gemütlichen Abend beim Küster auf den Weg machen und die Jüngeren sich auf das fröhliche Miteinander beim Christsingen vorbereiten, stiehlt ein kleiner, gewitzter Teufel den Mond vom Himmel, um sich an dem Heiligenbilder malenden Dorfschmied zu rächen. Dieser ist in die schöne, aber widerspenstige Oxana verliebt ist und hat es sicherlich auch in dieser Mondnacht vor, sie zu umwerben.

"Diario de un loco", publicada en 1834, es una historia muy corta, de apenas viente páginas, pero que se compensa con lo hilarante y extraño de su contenido, muy al estilo de Gogol. La historia es escrita a manera de diario íntimo contado en primera persona y ordenado cronológicamente por un funcionario público, llamado Aksenti Ivanovich (42 años) y de un apellido extraño, según comentario de uno de los personajes. El diario inicia un tal 3 de octubre, no se precisa el año y se va narrando muy escasamente de lo que le va sucediendo al personaje.

The Nose is a short story by Nikolai Gogol and was published in 1836. It tells the story of a man (known as Major Kovalyov) who lost his nose in an extraordinarily strange incident. He soon realizes that his nose dressed as a man of high rank and pretending to be a human being: It goes to church and can talk to Kovalyov. He tries to get the nose back on his face in many different ways but the nose refuses to return.

Den Spott seiner Kollegen ignoriert er, am gesellschaftlichen Leben nimmt er kaum teil. Erst, als er sich einen Mantel kauft, den er sich lange Zeit vom Munde abgespart hat, ändert sich sein Leben schlagartig. Er wird nun von seiner Umwelt wahrgenommen, und seine Kollegen veranstalten sogar ein kleines Fest für ihn und den Mantel. Dann jedoch wird er überfallen und der neue Mantel wird ihm gestohlen.

"The Nose" is the second best known story of Gogol, after "The Overcoat". A military major discovers his nose is missing and works to recover it. He finds the nose but it pretends to have a life of its own, as a fellow human. It in fact has a higher rank than the Major himself. The Major is perplexed, goes back to his apartment, and has the nose returned to him. With great joy he recovers his nose, only to find it won't reattach to his face. After much going on, he finds the nose reattached to his face.
