It was seven o'clock on a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day's rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws, one after the other, to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived.

This collection brings together 17 of Kipling's early stories, written between 1885 and 1888, when Kipling was working as a journalist in India. "The Man Who Would Be King" is the story of two British vagabonds who set off to establish a small kingdom among primitive tribesmen in Afghanistan. Only one of the men returns, and his condition is so bad that the newspaperman-narrator barely recognizes him.

On Midsummer’s Eve, Dan and Una enact A Midsummer Night’s Dream three times over - right under Pook’s Hill. That is how they meet Puck, “the oldest Old Thing in England” and the last of the People of the Hills. Through Puck, they are introduced to the nearly forgotten pages of old England’s history and to characters that can illuminate their own historical predicaments. Originally published in 1906, these 10 stories and accompanying poems were intended for both adults and children.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. This decade is resplendent with literature and its many prodigiously talented authors who write on as varied a range of subjects as might be thought possible. Yet each is studded with careful literary precision and narrative verve. It is a remarkable decade.

Story4 out of 5 stars 1
At the turn of the century, the short story form gained enormous popularity. Against the frozen Alaskan landscape of "To Build a Fire", a miner struggles to survive the splintering whiteness of sub-zero temperatures. "Isle of Voices" captures the Hawaii of old, where magic transports a young man to an island of powerful spirits. "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" pits a mongoose against a cobra in the steamy beauty of an Indian garden. Recorded Books’ award-winning narrators turn these stories into absorbing productions.

Kipling, our narrator, tells this strange story: he was running a newspaper in a big Indian city. In the hot stillness of one night when he was putting the paper to bed, two men came into his office. They were red-bearded giant Daniel Dravot and his friend Peachy Carnehan. These two 'gentlemen at large', as they called themselves, lately of the British army, had put together an insane and dangerous plan: they wanted to be Kings of Kafiristan, a mountainous region of Afghanistan.

The White Seal is a short story by the Nobel Prize-winning British author Rudyard Kipling. It first appeared in print in the August 1893 issue of the London-based magazine National Review. It was published again in 1894 as part of the anthology The Jungle Book. Unusually for a story in The Jungle Book, none of the action in The White Seal takes place in India. The story proper begins on an island in the Bering Sea between Russia and Alaska. The title character and protagonist, Kotick, is the first white seal ever to have been born on the island.

Published in 1899, Stalky & Co. by Rudyard Kipling transports readers to an English boarding school nestled in the coastal town of Westward Ho!—a place notable not only for its quirky name but also for its literary origins, inspired by Charles Kingsleys novel. This captivating collection of linked short stories follows the adventures of the titular character, Stalky, alongside his companions, exploring the complexities of adolescence. With Beetle, a character reminiscent of Kipling himself, and Stalky possibly based on Lionel Dunsterville, these tales delve into themes of bullying, ...

When you consider the depth of literary talent available over the extraordinary length of Queen Victoria’s reign, allied to the fascination with their all things spiritual on ‘the other side’, then perhaps it’s simply right place, right time.
