The Tao Te Ching, also known as The Tao and Its Characteristics, is an ancient spiritual book of expressions and aphorisms on the mysterious nature of the "tao" - a mysterious, force-like principle of the universe which emphasizes the discipline and philosophy of "non-action". The underlying principles of the Tao Te Ching includes strength tempered with humility and self-restraint for efficient, focused participation in the harmonious flow of life.

I didn't set out to create a new translation of the Tao Te Ching when writing The Way. Since Lao Tzu wrote it in the fourth century BC, it has become one of the most widely translated works in the world and hardly needs a new scholarly treatment. Instead, I sought to capture the way the verses have come alive in me with language and metaphors that are more easily understood by a modern Western listener.

Miyamoto Musashi wrote the master text on being a well-trained and competent soldier-samurai, entitled The Book of Five Rings. This book covers the tactics, strategies, and philosophy of the singular master warrior. Along with Musashi's work, we have provided the Tao Te Ching, one of the philosophical text that contributed to the development of martial arts.
