John Calvin, a pivotal figure in the Protestant Reformation, was a French theologian and pastor whose insights continue to shape Christian thought today. Originally trained as a lawyer, Calvin left the Roman Catholic Church around 1530 and sought refuge in Switzerland amidst rising tensions against Protestants in France.
