Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins was born on 9th February 1863 in Clapton, London. He was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead, Marlborough College and Balliol College, Oxford. Hope trained as a lawyer and barrister and was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1887. Despite what was thought to be a promising legal career, he had literary ambitions and wrote in his spare time. His early works appeared in various periodicals of the day but for his first book, ‘A Man of Mark’ (1890), with no publisher interested, he published with his own resources.

Carnacki realiza sus métodos de buscar exhaustivamente y completamente en el área designada para eliminar las evidentes causas físicas de una manifestación.

De acuerdo con la tradición familiar de los Higgins, toda primogénita es acosada por un caballo fantasmal durante su noviazgo. Esta historia ha sido considerada una leyenda, pero ahora por primera vez en siete generaciones, una mujer es la primogénita y su prometido ha terminado con un brazo roto después de un ataque por un asaltante misterioso. Carnacki investiga una manifestación en casa de su madre. La primera indicación de que algo está mal viene cuando Carnacki, que estuvo leyendo hasta tarde, oye a su madre golpear el piso, o al menos eso es lo que piensa, para indicarle que es hora de ir la cama. Sin embargo, ella no recuerda haberlo hecho al día siguiente, y pasa de nuevo a la noche siguiente. Cuando Carnacki investiga en su habitación, encuentra su puerta abierta, pero ella se encuentra dormida.
