Der Erste Offizier Tornot nimmt an einer Rätselrallye teil und erhofft sich reichlich Gewinn. Als Beifahrer wählt er Sherlock Holmes. Die Rallye entpuppt sich als Tour de Force und verlangt beiden das Letzte ab.

Der gute Dr. Watson versieht wie jede Woche seinen freiwilligen Samariterdienst im Londoner East End, als er plötzlich mit einer hageren Gestalt konfrontiert wird, die sich vor Schmerzen krümmt und mit Bisswunden übersäht auf einer Pritsche abgelegt wird. Watson lässt Lovecraft zu Holmes in die Baker Street verfrachten, wo er sich zumindest von der Ohnmacht und seinem ersten Schock erholen kann. Gibt es dieses „menschenfressende Ungeheuer" also doch noch, das seit letztem Herbst rund 20 Tote gefordert hat und dem auch schon Kinder zum Opfer gefallen sind, wie die Presse schreibt?

Die rätselhafte Zerstörung zweier Hochhäuser ruft Sherlock Holmes auf den Plan. Er soll gemeinsam mit Dr. Watson und dem Ersten Offizier Tornot einer Zeugin, die der letzten Katastrophe knapp entkommen ist, nähere Informationen entlocken.

Graf Dracula IV. hat sich auf einem Planeten ein Touristenparadies eingerichtet, jedoch zu wenig Steuer an die Union bezahlt. Das ruft Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson auf den Plan. Außerdem sollen sie feststellen, wohin viele junge Unions-Bürger verschwunden sind.

Auf Wega 5 tobt ein Wahlkampf. Die Kandidaten scheinen auch vor gewalttätigen Mitteln nicht zurückzuschrecken. Sherlock Holmes soll mit Dr. Watson und dem Ersten Offizier Tornot nach dem Rechten sehen. Bald gibt es ein erstes Opfer.

Sherlock Holmes bekommt einen neuen Auftrag: Ein gewisser Dr. Jekyll hat Ärger mit jemandem, der sich für ihn ausgibt und seine Patientinnen besucht. Es ist Mr. Hyde, der seine bösen Spielchen auch mit Dr. Watson treibt.

Die Ultimo-1 muss einen mysteriösen Passagier in eine Station bringen. Gegenüber Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson behauptet der Mann, von Albträumen gequält zu werden, in denen ein gewisser Cthulhu auftaucht. Nahe der Station steht ein Denkmal dieses bösartigen Wesens und bald gibt es den ersten Toten.

Dank geschenkter Zirkuskarten kommt Dr. Watson in den Genuss einer tollen Vorstellung und Sherlock Holmes zum Lösen merkwürdig erscheinender Mordfälle. Er findet heraus, dass die Täter nicht belangt werden können.

The Valley of Fear is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is loosely based on the Molly Maguires and Pinkerton agent James McParland. The story was first published in the Strand Magazine between September 1914 and May 1915. The novel starts with Sherlock Holmes receiving a cipher message from Fred Porlock, a pseudonymous agent of Professor Moriarty. After Porlock sends the message, however, he changes his mind for fear of Moriarty's discovering that he is a traitor. He decides not to send the key to the cipher, but he sends Holmes a note telling of this decision.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1893, by Arthur Conan Doyle. Danach muss eine strittige Entscheidung über den weiteren Aufenthaltsort der Reliquien getroffen werden. Konflikte und Eskalationen erscheinen unvermeidlich.

Wieder zurück in Bari gibt es keine Atempause: Ein weiterer Anschlag betrifft Don Vitos Taverne, in der sich Watson befindet. Währenddessen überträgt Kardinal Jacobini die Entscheidungsgewalt über den weiteren Verbleib der Reliquien des Heiligen Nikolaus an Holmes.
