Die Geschichte beinhaltet den Kampf des Meisterdetektivs gegen seinen kriminellen Gegner Professor Moriarty, der mit dem Sturz der beiden in die Reichenbachfälle bei Meiringen in der Schweiz endet.

Holmes und Watson bekommen Besuch von Dr. Percy Trewelyan, einem jungen Facharzt für Nervenkrankheiten. Eines Tages tauchte ein Mr. Blessington auf, der ihm ein lukratives Angebot machte: Übernahme aller Kosten gegen einen Anteil vom Gewinn der Praxis. Trewelyan willigte ein; beide Männer lebten fortan in einem Haus und Blessington wurde sein Dauerpatient.

Colonel Barclay wurde in einem verschlossenen Raum tot aufgefunden, neben ihm seine ohnmächtige Frau. Sherlock Holmes verfolgt einen verdächtigen Krüppel und deckt nach und nach die düstere Vergangenheit des toten Colonel auf.

Oktober/November 1893: In Der Marinevertrag muss Sherlock Holmes ein für die Regierung wichtiges Dokument wieder auffinden. Es wurde aus dem Büro von Percy Phelps, einem ehemaligen Schulkameraden von Dr. Watson, entwendet. Um Hilfe suchend wendet sich Phelps an seinen alten Schulkameraden, der wiederum seinen Freund Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe bittet.
