Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born September 29, 1547, was a Spanish writer widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote, a work often cited as both the first modern novel and one of the pinnacles of world literature. Much of his life was spent in poverty and obscurity, many of its details are disputed or unknown, and the bulk of his surviving work was produced in the three years preceding his death.

Cervantes escribió "El Quijote" con la intención de parodiar los libros de caballerías, que consideraba simples sartas de disparates desprovistas de todo interés. Para conseguir su propósito, ideó la historia de un hidalgo aldeano que enloquece de tanto leer las inverosímiles hazañas de héroes como Amadís y Palmerín, y que, al igual que los caballeros andantes, se echa a los caminos con el noble afán de ayudar a los necesitados.

La historia sigue a dos jóvenes nobles, Carriazo y Avendaño, que, por deseo de aventura, deciden abandonar sus acomodadas vidas para vivir como pícaros. Llegan a Toledo y se hospedan en una posada donde conocen a Costanza, una hermosa joven que trabaja como fregona. Fascinados por su belleza y noble porte, los jóvenes descubren que Costanza no es una sirvienta común, sino que es de origen noble, lo que da lugar a enredos, identidades ocultas y finalmente un desenlace feliz en el que todos recuperan su verdadero lugar social.

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte der gleichnamigen Hauptperson, eines verarmten Junkers, der durch die Lektüre unzähliger Ritterromane den Verstand verliert und beschließt, nun selbst als Ritter auszuziehen, „um Abenteuer zu suchen und all das zu üben, was, wie er gelesen, die fahrenden Ritter übten, das heißt jegliche Art von Unbill wiedergutzumachen und sich in Gelegenheiten und Gefahren zu begeben, durch deren Überwindung er ewigen Namen und Ruhm gewinnen würde.“ Don Quijote holt seinen alten Klepper aus dem Stall, gibt ihm den klangvollen Namen Rosinante, stellt sich notdürftig eine Rüstung zusammen und bricht auf.

Der weise Cide Hamete Benengeli erzählt, dass Don Quixote, nachdem er von seinen Wirten und allen übrigen, die bei dem Begräbnisse des Schäfers Chrysostomus gegenwärtig waren, Abschied genommen, sich mit seinem Stallmeister in dasselbe Gebüsch wandte, in welchem sich die Schäferin Marcella verloren hatte. Als er länger als zwei Stunden nach allen Seiten suchend herum gestreift war, ohne sie zu finden, hielten sie auf einer Wiese an, die frisches Gras bedeckte und durch die ein frischer, so angenehmer Bach floss, welches sie einlud und nötigte, hier die Stunden der Siesta zuzubringen, welche schon mit der größten Hitze einzutreten begann.

So endigte der Gefangene seine Erzählung, und Don Fernando sagte: »Wahrlich, Herr Kapitän, die Art, wie Ihr Eure Begebenheiten erzählt habt, ist so, dass sie dem Wunderbaren der Geschichte selber gleichkömmt; alles ist höchst seltsam und voller Zufälle, die den Zuhörer in Erstaunen setzen, und das Vergnügen, welches wir im Anhören empfunden haben, ist so groß, dass, wenn uns auch der Morgen in dieser Erzählung überraschen sollte, wir uns doch freuen würden, wenn sie von neuem anfinge.«
