Hamish Macbeth riceve la notizia che c'è stato un omicidio ad Arrat House, in cui vive il ricchissimo Arthur Trent ma, sebbene sia un poliziotto, non si scapicolla per raggiungere la (presunta) scena del crimine. Trent infatti è famoso – e famigerato – per i suoi scherzi, anche di pessimo gusto, e Hamish ne sa qualcosa, dato che, tempo prima, era stato chiamato proprio ad Arrat House per indagare su un delitto, scoprendo poi che la "vittima" era il maggiordomo di Trent coperto di sangue finto.
