In a coming-of-age story reminiscent of The Outsiders, 13-year-old Reason Nelson attends a party that is busted by the local police. As he flees, he collides with a detective and a drug dealer. He snatches up what he believes to be his leather jacket and crawls into a doghouse. In the pocket of this coat, Reason discovers a key that opens a safe-deposit box containing evidence that will solve the murder of a young female informant. Reason finds himself running from both the drug dealer who murdered her and the detective trying to solve her murder.

Shortly after his mother is killed in a car accident, Lucas leaves foster care at Wounded Arrow and returns home to Havelock to live with his dad. At his elementary school, Lucas stumbles upon three Muslim boys forcefully recruiting a young Muslim boy to carry out a school shooting. Lucas intervenes on behalf of Ali Kharim and comes away from the encounter carrying a pistol with scorpions engraved on its pearl handles. Little does he know that inserted into the butt of the gun is a flash drive.

The Havelock Emerald is an Irish pub located in the small suburb of Havelock, Nebraska. The Emerald’s iconic stained-glass window depicting a black dragon carrying a bright green emerald in its talons was gifted to the owner of the pub, Billy Connors, by a Gypsy chieftain back in Ireland years ago. Inside the pub is a gateway to an alternative realm. Old Billy is an Irish gunrunner and the Gatekeeper linking this world with the many realms beyond.
