London im Winter 1945/46. Der Zweite Weltkrieg ist vorbei, Nicholas Jenkins nimmt sein ziviles Leben aus Vorkriegszeiten wieder auf und widmet sich seinem schriftstellerischem Schaffen. Und trotz Zerstörung, Lebensmittelknappheit und anderer Entbehrungen blüht die literarische Szene. Währenddessen gestaltet sich Widmerpools Liebesleben gewohnt turbulent, denn er vermutet, dass Pamela ihn mit einem Schriftsteller betrügt.

1942 wird Nicholas Jenkins zurück nach London versetzt. Hier begegnet er der aufregenden Pamela Flytton, die bei ihm und seinen Freunden für Unruhe sorgt. Nachdem Nick zunächst fasziniert von ihr ist, verlobt sie sich ausgerechnet mit Widmerpool. Nick lässt seine Beziehungen spielen und steigt gesellschaftlich weiter auf, dabei bergen das Ende des Krieges und der Übergang zum zivilen Leben einige Herausforderungen.

1941 befindet sich England und somit auch Nicholas Jenkins mitten im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Nicks langjähriger Bekannter Widmerpool ist mittlerweile sein Kommandant. Widmerpools selbstbezogener Führungsstil sorgt für Spannungen im Regiment, sodass Nick mit Hochdruck an einer Veränderung seiner Situation arbeitet. Zunehmend steigt auch die Sorge um Freunde und Familienmitglieder, die in London unmittelbar vom Krieg bedroht sind.

1940 - der Zweite Weltkrieg ist ausgebrochen. Der Kriegsbeginn ist ein Einschnitt im Leben von Nicholas Jenkins und seinen Freunden. Als zweiter Leutnant tritt er einem Regiment in Wales bei, geführt von einem übereifrigen Kommandanten. Der Alltag als Soldat auf heimatlichem Boden schwankt zwischen absurden Manövern und quälender Langeweile, und so verbringen Nick und seine Kameraden die meiste Zeit mit Warten und mit dem Gedanken an Frauen.
