È l'affresco grandioso di una società meridionale aggrappata alle antiche usanze ma scossa dagli echi del progresso europeo, in cui i personaggi del romanzo subiscono sulla loro pelle le lacerazioni di un mondo che va inesorabilmente cambiando.

Cosa può permettersi chi non ha denaro? Non certo l'affetto, ma soltanto l'onore, per lo meno nella Sicilia di fine '800 che ci presenta Giovanni Verga. "Pane nero", pubblicata originariamente da Verga all'interno di "Novelle rusticane", ci mostra uno spaccato di miseria e povertà. Un testo che ancora oggi pone interrogativi e spunti di riflessione attualissimi.

Le "Novelle rusticane" rappresentano uno dei momenti più alti e fortemente originali dello sperimentalismo narrativo del tardo Ottocento italiano. Pubblicate per la prima volta a Torino dall'editore Casanova nel 1883, rappresentano il secondo scritto verista di Verga. L'autore siciliano non solo affronta il tema della "roba", tema a lui carissimo e centrale nella sua poetica, ma introduce anche una serie di tematiche sociali ed economiche della Sicilia di fine '800.

Celebre storia d'amore tra una ragazza di buona famiglia e un bandito, "L'amante di Gramigna" venne portata sul grande schermo anche da Carlo Lizzani nel 1968, nel celebre film interpretato da Gian Maria Volonté e Stefania Sandrelli. In questa novella Verga ci racconta un amore intenso e unico, capace di sfidare leggi e convenzioni. Un sentimento totalizzante che legherà in maniera indissolubile la bella Peppa al bandito Gramigna.

Giovanni Verga ci presenta la vita di Pentolaccia, povero bracciante siciliano perdutamente innamorato de "la Venera". Inganni e tradimenti renderanno però la vita di Pentolaccia un vero inferno, fino al drammatico epilogo finale.

Le altre donne del paese la temono perché è spregiudicata e disinibita. Gli uomini la guardano con un misto di paura e lussuria. Tutti la chiamano "la lupa", per quel suo spirito anticonformista così raro nella Sicilia ottocentesca. Una storia fatta di sentimenti fortissimi che sorprende il lettore per la sua intensità e per il suo climax drammatico ed avvincente.

Durante i festeggiamenti in onore di San Rocco si scatenano delle liti con i devoti di San Pasquale: volano sberle, oggetti, vi sono molti feriti, litigi tra parenti e saltano anche matrimoni. Uno spaccato della Sicilia ottocentesca tratteggiato con fine maestria da Giovanni Verga e narrato da Gaetano Marino.

"Fantasticheria" resta a tutt'oggi una delle novelle più celebri di Giovanni Verga. Un vero e proprio manifesto letterario in cui il Verga ci spiega come "bisogna farci piccini anche noi" per riuscire a comprendere la realtà, i sentimenti e la quotidianità degli umili pescatori di Aci Trezza.

Pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1878 nella pagine de Il Fanfulla, "Rosso Malpelo" è diventata nel corso degli anni un classico della letteratura italiana. Una novella che rappresenta ancora oggi una testimonianza vivida delle durissime condizioni dei lavoratori delle cave siciliane dell'800, costretti a una "non vita" fatta di fatiche e sofferenze estreme.

Verga ci racconta la storia di Jeli, ragazzo povero che vive da solo insieme alla pecore che porta al pascolo. Attraverso il suo rapporto conflittuale con Don Alfonso, ricco rampollo di famiglia, assistiamo alla graduale emarginazione di Jeli che, a causa della sua povertà e della sua condizione sociale, viene sempre più marginalizzato.
