The address of 221-B Baker Street in London became almost as well known as the mental marvel who lived there. That, of course, was the remarkable genius Sherlock Holmes. This is the second novella detailing the continuing adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the world's first consulting detective, and his friend and colleague, Dr. John Watson. In The Sign of Four, Holmes and Watson are hired by Mary Morstan to investigate the mysterious circumstances of her father's death, which will set them on the trail of a lost Indian treasure and in pursuit of two of the strangest criminals in the Holmes canon.

In 1886 Arthur Conan Doyle, whilst struggling to make a success of a failing medical practice in Portsmouth, set about writing a novel in order to boost his income. He began a story about a fiercely intelligent sleuth called Sheridan Hope. A year later A Study in Scarlet was published, and one of the most successful of literary characters began to take hold of the public's affections.

Die Buchhalterin Lura kommt aus dem Urlaub zurück und erzählt Sherlock Holmes von einem verschwundenen Reisegefährten. Keiner vermisst ihn, es scheint ihn nie gegeben zu haben. Das weckt das Interesse des Meisterdetektivs, der mit Dr. Watson ebenfalls in den Urlaub aufbricht.

Wohlbehalten in New York angekommen, möchte sich Holmes' Leibarzt Doktor Watson auf einige gemütliche Urlaubstage in der „Neuen Welt" einstellen. Doch dazu kommt es nicht. Zeitungsberichte bestätigen, dass ein fürchterlicher Brand aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit noch nicht ganz geklärt ist. Sherlock Holmes würde dies nicht besonders beunruhigen, wenn nicht mehr als hundertfünfzig Menschen damals zu Tode gekommen worden wären.

Er wollte Holmes unbedingt an seinem nächsten Tatort mitten im Central Park dabei haben. Dann war da noch Ruth Hampton, die Witwe des ermordeten Bankiers Benjamin Hampton, die eigentlich nur ihr Erbe retten wollte. Bis ihr übereifriger Bruder ihr ungewollt einen Strich durch die gut geplante Rechnung macht und selber zum Täter wird. Holmes und Watson sind in Amerika so weit entfernt von einem echten Urlaub, wie von der Baker Street in London.

Als Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson nur durch Zufall einem Brandanschlag im Waldorf Hotel entgehen, sind sie froh, im Apartment der Hampton Bank eine neue Herberge gefunden zu haben. Direktor Benjamin Hampton, der sich immer noch in Holmes Schuld wähnt, freut sich, dass beide nun offenbar sicher vor dem langen Arm der Vergeltung durch die New Yorker Polizei sind. Gerade deswegen konfrontiert er Holmes mit einem Fall, der besonderer Sorgfalt bedarf: ein geheimes Banken-Treffen in Bundesstaat Georgia sollte geheim bleiben.
