Andre Germaine has been condemned by the law of the state and freaky circumstance. He has been accused of his own murder and of a crime against his own family. He fought under Boneparte, he served his country, married and fathered a child, but all those things come to nothing in the cell of the condemned. He believes it is the working of a curse placed upon his father to last through all the generations of the line for having loved too well a woman who was promised to another man.

In the teeming city of medieval Paris lives Quasimodo, a man born with a hunchback who lives in the Notre Dame Cathedral as a bell ringer. He is treated despicably by everyone around him, save for Esmeralda, a beautiful woman who has attracted the eyes of many in Paris. His love for Esmeralda will drive him to do daring feats of bravery to keep her safe from the world and those who would harm her, even if it leads to his own undoing.

In the grotesque bell-ringer Quasimodo, Victor Hugo created one of the most vivid characters in classic fiction. Quasimodo's doomed love for the beautiful gipsy girl Esmeralda is an example of the traditional love theme of beauty and the beast. Yet, set against the massive background of Notre Dame de Paris and interwoven with the sacred and secular life of medieval France, it takes on a larger perspective.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (original French title, Notre-Dame de Paris) is set in 1482 in Paris, in and around the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. It tells the story of a poor Gypsy girl (La Esmeralda) and a misshapen bell-ringer (Quasimodo), one of the most colorful characters in literature, who falls in love with her. They are both victimized by a corrupt priest (Claude Frollo) and begin an adventure filled with great peril and great heroism.

Victor Hugo nous fait entrer dans la tête d'un condamné à mort qui attend son exécution. On ignore qui il est, quel crime il a commis. Car l'auteur ne veut pas débattre mais montrer l'horreur et l'absurdité de la situation. Son texte a une telle puissance de suggestion que l'auditeur, s'identifiant au narrateur, partage avec lui l'angoisse et les vaines espérances. Réquisitoire le plus véhément jamais prononcé contre la peine de mort, ce roman est aussi une admirable leçon d'écriture et d'humanité.
