In the grand tradition of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, Stanislaw Lem's The Invincible tells the story of a space cruiser sent to an obscure planet to determine the fate of a sister spaceship whose communication with Earth has abruptly ceased. The year is 3149, and a vast paper destroying blight-papyralysis-has obliterated much of the planet's written history. However, these rare memoirs, preserved for centuries in a volcanic rock, record the strange life of a man trapped in a hermetically sealed underground community.

Hal Bregg is an astronaut who returns from a space mission in which only 10 biological years have passed for him, while 127 years have elapsed on Earth. He finds that the Earth has changed beyond recognition, filled with human beings who have been medically neutralized. How does an astronaut join a civilization that shuns risk?

Denn Regis III ist zwar ohne Leben, aber dennoch nicht unbewohnt.

Eine der großen Dystopien des 20. Jahrhunderts - aber lustig. Hier bleibt Ijon Tichy, der Held so vieler lemscher Erzählungen, ausnahmsweise auf dem Boden, das heißt auf der Erde. Es bedeutet allerdings nicht, dass es ihm hier langweilig würde, ganz im Gegenteil: Er wird beschossen, eingefroren, aufgetaut, betäubt, benebelt, beglückt und bekommt schließlich noch einen Rattenschwanz verpasst. "Der futurologische Kongreß" ist eine der großen Dystopien des 20. Jahrhunderts – allerdings deutlich lustiger als die Konkurrenz von Orwell, Huxley oder Atwood.

Mit seinen futuristischen Werken war der polnische Schriftsteller Stanisław Lem seiner Zeit voraus. Bereits 1964 beschrieb er mögliche Formen virtueller Realität. In Frieden auf Erden sind die Großmächte übereingekommen, ihre gesamten Waffenarsenale von der Erde auf den Mond zu verlagern. Allerdings weiß niemand auf Erden, was sich auf dem Mond wirklich abspielt, denn die "Doktrin der totalen Unkenntnis" wird strikt eingehalten. Zeit für den Weltraumreisenden Ijon Tichy als Agent der "Lunar Agency" auf dem Mond nach dem Rechten zu sehen.
