Summary

A space cruiser, in search of its sister ship, encounters beings descended from self-replicating machines.

In the grand tradition of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, Stanislaw Lem's The Invincible tells the story of a space cruiser sent to an obscure planet to determine the fate of a sister spaceship whose communication with Earth has abruptly ceased. Landing on the planet Regis III, navigator Rohan and his crew discover a form of life that has apparently evolved from autonomous, self-replicating machines—perhaps the survivors of a “robot war.” Rohan and his men are forced to confront the classic quandary: what course of action can humanity take once it has reached the limits of its knowledge? In The Invincible, Lem has his characters confront the inexplicable and the bizarre: the problem that lies just beyond analytical reach.

if you are new to this story, skip the foreword.

First off, I haven't finished the book yet but I have really enjoyed the story and concepts in this book.
All of the characters are well written and I don't believe any make any of the stupid mistakes that are so common in many modern stories.

However. The ability to go into this story blind was taken away when the foreword explains what seems to be the entire book. There would be mysteries and revelations in the story if the foreword hadn't explained them all in detail before the first chapter.

If this could be reformatted to have the foreword come after the story and decompress or discuss what you just heard, it would be a thousand times better. it could even be changed to simply explain the impact the book had in the foreword while avoiding details and then have the detailed explanation afterwards.

Please skip the foreword.

Fantastic story spoiled by the foreword.
