It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the 40s and 50s in a small apartment crowded with books in 12 languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. His mother and father, both wonderful people, were ill-suited to each other. When Oz was 12 and a half years old, his mother committed suicide - a tragedy that was to change his life. He leaves the constraints of the family and the community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen to join a kibbutz.

We meet the middle-aged Albert; his wife, whom he has lost to cancer; his prodigal son, who wanders the mountains of Tibet hoping to find himself; and his son's enticing young girlfriend, with whom Albert becomes infatuated and who in turn sleeps with her boyfriend's close friend. In this human profusion is a fever dream of chaos and order, love and eroticism, loyalty and betrayal, and ultimately an extraordinary energy.

גיבור הספר פנתר במרתף הוא נער המכונה פרופסור, מפני שאינו מפסיק לבדוק מילים, להפוך אותן, להרכיבן ולסדרן מחדש. בימים של חרדה ושל עוינות הדדית הוא מתיידד עם שוטר בריטי תימהוני ומואשם על ידי חבריו בבגידה. בתוך כך הוא מגלה את עצמו מחדש, בודק, מהפך ומרכיב מחדש את עולמו, את יחסו להוריו, לאויב, ולעצמו.

שלוש נובלות מכונסות בקובץ הר העצה הרעה: "הר העצה הרעה", "אדון לוי", "געגועים". המקום, בכל שלושת הסיפורים, הוא ירושלים; הזמן - שלהי תקופת המנדט; וחומר הבעירה של שלושתם הוא הגעגוע. בהר העצה הרעה, על פי המסורת הנוצרית, התכנסה מועצת הכוהנים שהחליטה למסור את ישו לצליבה. לימים נבנה על ההר ארמונו המרהיב של הנציב העליון הבריטי, מוקד המאבק בין השליטים הבריטים לבין היהודים בארץ ישראל.
